Social Work England will remove temporarily registered practitioners – who numbered about 6,500 as of this summer – while Social Care Wales will close its temporary register to its five remaining members.

Over 800 practitioners have applied to rejoin the social work register in the immediate aftermath of this year’s renewal round. Social Work England said that, as of today, 842 had applied to be restored to the register, at a cost of £135. Departures from register in line with previous years.

More social workers staying on register compared with last year following renewal deadline

Provisional data from Social Work England shows that, out of 96,948 practitioners needing to renew, just 2,869 (3%) failed to do so, compared to 4,590 last year and lower than the 4,000 to 6,000 leaving the register annually in recent years. The regulator said 93,253 (96%) completed their renewal applications, compared to 91,720 last year.

More staff found to be practising illegally as social workers, says regulator

Colum Conway, chief executive, Social Work England “We have seen an increase in cases where people are practising as social workers without joining our register,” said chief executive Colum Conway. From April to September 2023, it opened 66 cases, up from 42 over the same period in 2022. “This is illegal.
