If a partner discloses issues of violence or abuse, it can upset the other who engages in such behavior. If the one who has been violent and/or controlling refuses to attend or afterwards refuses to allow communication between their partner and therapist to review progress, those are red flags.

It also doesn’t mean the teen will attend and if they do, it doesn’t mean they will engage. Structural supports include the parents maintaining good communication as well as maintaining expectations and limits. While you or someone else may think a particular teen needs counseling, it doesn’t mean it will be helpful.

No matter how short or long a break he took to figure himself out and no matter how reasonable he returned, she was triggered by his not staying fully engaged and needing this time to process things. With that she would learn to calm herself, process her feelings and learn better communication skills too.
