We All Need Support at Some Time

Gary Direnfeld

The other evening I gathered my family for a ZOOM call to share the news of my angiogram. It came on the heels of a day that began with a call to go to hospital at 7:00 am. Owing to a number of emergency patients ahead of me and other complex patients, the procedure for my angiogam was late in the afternoon. Recovery another 2.5 hours. Although mildly sedated, the doctor walked me through the findings while still on the table.

My dad, Paddy Barry, who has died aged 84, had a long career as a social worker, working mainly with children. From 1974 to 1997 he was the principal officer for children’s residential and day care for Wandsworth council, in south-west London, which in those days ran more than 25 children’s homes across the borough. Paddy always viewed the care system from the perspective of the child, working hard to ensure that children’s life chances would be improved by being in care.
