‘Significant’ cut in social worker caseloads helps council rise to ‘good

Social workers have been freed up to spend more time with children after council investment led to a “significant reduction” in caseloads, Ofsted has found. Ofsted rated Walsall council as good overall at a full inspection last month, after telling the authority it required improvement in 2017 and rating it as inadequate nine years ago. Everything I am about to recount is true except for one detail: Two young children are taken from their mother. Their father is eager to take them in, but at the time of the removal he’s in the hospital. That’s because after he was hit by a drunk driver and confined to a wheelchair it led to medical complications that sometimes require hospitalization.

DfE gives regulator £2.3m to help clear fitness to practise backlog

The Department for Education (DfE) has given Social Work England (SWE) an extra £2.3m to enable it to clear a backlog of fitness to practise (FtP) cases. The regulator asked the department for the money to enable it to investigate remaining FtP cases it took over from its predecessor, the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), in December 2019.

Government ends interventions at improved councils

The government has ended statutory interventions in two council children’s services, while removing a commissioner appointed to direct improvements at a third. The Department for Education has revoked improvement directions issued to Sunderland and Worcestershire, meaning they are no londer under an obligation to comply with DfE instructions. The DfE initially issued a direction to Sunderland City Council in April 2017 after Ofsted had judged its children’s services as inadequate.
