I have had several messages and conversations this week about violence in schools. If your child isn’t sleeping well at night or expresses fear about attending school, that may not be anxiety as you thought. Again, ask your kid about violence literally in the classroom, let alone the school yard. They were all unrelated.

Think Beyond Counseling for Your Teen

While you or someone else may think a particular teen needs counseling, it doesn’t mean it will be helpful. Counseling is one of those things that simply works best when attended on a voluntary basis by someone who self-identifies a need as well as a desire. Think beyond counseling. Looks good, does nothing.

The Fear Wasn’t of School

——— The issue was the child’s fear of going to school. Her child’s fear was not about the school. Her child was not anxious about school, but her safety as she had worried about her mother. Her child did return to school. We talked about the parental relationship. She put it together.

Educational Assistants’ Advice to Parents for the Start of School

2) Please know in many schools the EA is not invited to meetings regarding your child and nor do many have access to your child’s records or reports. 4) Please do not use the school as a testing ground for changes in medication, routines, food choices, etc, without first informing the EA. EAs are not there to judge.

This is reflective of the comments: “394 violent incident reports filed in 27 days of school, that is how our year is going in our board. In one class alone over 11 evacuations in 27 school days. School boards have given fancy names to evacuations now, they call them learning walks or extra library time, gym time or outside time.”
