In 2020, mental health statistics showed that 1 in 5 American adults experienced a mental health issue, 1 in 6 young people experienced a major depressive episode, and 1 in 20 Americans lived with a serious mental illness, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression. Why would someone not seek help for a mental disorder?

In the past, mental health experts used many terms such as depression, anxiety, and acute stress disorder to refer to a nervous breakdown. The term is no longer used because it has not been recognized as a mental health disorder by the American Psychiatry Association in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM–5).

This would be the first of many unsuccessful psychiatric hospital stays. Considering that the National Institute of Health states around half of the people who experience mental illness in their lives will also suffer a substance abuse disorder at some point, dots need to be connected here.

The lack of understanding of these barriers to mental health care access has terrible consequences in increased suicides and school shootings (Nursing@USC 2018). Several minority groups develop mental health issues such as affective, psychotic, substance use disorders, and depression at higher rates than whites from discrimination.
