I recently declined two requests for couple counseling. I always screen referrals for domestic violence as well as substance use. Therein we can develop a risk profile for the likelihood of future violence. Couple counseling can be an intense setting where issues are laid bare.

Couple Counseling: Is It Safe?

It’s not uncommon for me to decline a request for couple counseling. Safety is code for concerns of domestic violence. Couple counseling can be an intense experience. The reasons typically have to do with safety and/or substance use and/or serious mental health issues. Screening for these issues is never perfect.

Even When So Young, They Know.

The behavior between the partner and mom, that is referred to as domestic violence. It is also referred to as intimate partner violence. People don’t have to be physically touched or hurt for this behavior to be labled violence. Already, in a child this young, the child felt a need to be protective of their parent.
