In a paper on whether psychotherapy is a form of prostitution, philosopher Rupert Read suggests that therapy is to genuine loving friendship (‘agape’) as prostitution is to erotic love (‘eros’). Is psychotherapy, too, not a more subtle selling of such a fantasy? Now therapy is, directly or otherwise, paid for.
