About That Referral, It’s OK to Think Twice

The person seeking to make the referral explained that the person always thinks they know more than the therapist. As a therapist It is important to know one’s own limits and demonstrate boundaries. Even for therapists. I declined the referral. There is no room for the input of another when one is so full of themselves.

This is where the therapist must make a decision. It doesn’t mean the therapist is comfortable with the possible degree of risk. If the one who has been violent and/or controlling refuses to attend or afterwards refuses to allow communication between their partner and therapist to review progress, those are red flags.

When The Trauma is Extreme

She said that previous therapists had said her background was the most extreme they have ever heard. Hearing that, my concern was that she worried about overwhelming the therapists. Sometimes therapists do get overwhelmed by the stories told to us by the folks we serve. I don’t know. They may have been. Vicarious trauma.

Does Your Child have GAD?

The child had only seen individual therapists, none of whom knew of the parent’s own anxiety related to childhood experiences. It was only when the new therapist insisted on meeting with the parents first did the one parent’s issue with anxiety related to their past, emerge. That is the nature of GAD.
