Despite a steady increase in palliative care utilization, racial and ethnic minority patients with metastatic breast cancer may be less likely to receive palliative care.

According to new findings presented by Freeman et al. at the 16th American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), ASCO Postreports that there has been a consistent rise in the utilization of palliative care from 2004 to 2020. However, it appears that racial and ethnic minority patients with metastatic breast cancer may have a lower likelihood of receiving palliative care compared to non-Hispanic White patients with the disease.

Investigators emphasized the importance of further research to better understand the factors contributing to this disparity in palliative care utilization.
