Substance use disorder is on the rise for older adults, but treatment remains complex.

The authors of an article published in The Lancet: Health Longevity discuss how substance use disorder is a prevalent condition among older adults over the age of 65, leaving them exposed to substance-related harms (e.g., risk of falls, delirium, etc.). The authors call for action to be taken to care for this population within an age-friendly health system. Per the authors, "to improve the health of this vulnerable population, approaches to care tailored to older people must be developed and integrated with addiction treatment to build age-friendly health systems that can address substance use disorder among older adults."
