A Serendipitous Meeting

Dear Readers,

Mr. UT pushed me into the dentist office for a checkup and we were chatting with the receptionist, when a woman walked over and started asking me about my cochlear implants. It turns out she had a smilier experience about going deaf over time. It was a chance meeting, and as we talked we instantly bonded over similar experiences.

Her deafness was due to problems during her delivery, the cause of mine was unknown, perhaps a virus or heredity. But the connection was made when we learned that we both had teachers and other people commenting on our speech, which sounded a bit different. It took years before anyone connected it to our loss of hearing. In fact, no one connected the two until we were in college.

We both experienced people asking what country we were from. We laughed when we talked about making up countries, or making up a “language” when people asked.

In her case, her deafness cannot be helped by the cochlear implants, but hearing aids help her hear sounds, not words. Her lip/face reading is much better than mine, and she learned to sign, but we had no problem communicating.

It was such a rewarding chance encounter, to have a connection with a stranger that had such similar experiences. I have had other chance meetings with strangers, that have also been rewarding.

If I had been closed off, I would have missed this chance, where I truly was understood, and hopefully she left with the same feeling!

PS – 2 days left before I can start to walk with a walker. So excited, even knowing it will hurt!

PSS – It is finally a real spring here and the turtles are enjoying the sun!!

  1. You two were surely meant to meet! I love the turtles! I clean a house that has a free range turtle about the size of the turtles in your picture. It’s always in my way. 😂❤️ So excited for you to start walking with a walker! 💪

  4. it’s always so nice to connect with someone that way. It’s kind of rare for me.Not many women are simultaneously a nurse, artist , weightlifter and hiker.Or have a past dabbling in modeling, rock climbing, and other odd combinations.Especially any who are post menopause and have kids in their 30s. But once in awhile i come across someone i vibe with in some special way and its very satisfying!

Pardon me for asking Wendy but have you ever thought about joining or forming a group with others who have lost their hearing? …excited you’ll be walking soon🤗!

    1. I have thought of that, there is a monthly meeting for people who have cochlear implants.
      It’s something I can look into more.
