Dispatches from the Future – Academic Edition – November 12, 2022

Here’s a collection of links that I’ve been gathering up the last year – exploring the future of higher education. They come at the subject from a wide variety of angles – and represent a continuing horizon scan of things I’m interested in, and may be of interest to colleagues across higher ed. This sector is shifting and evolving just as most are. For the last three years…I’ve done similar scans my role as a Presidential Futures Fellow as part of the campus-wide PSU Futures Collaboratory. (Check out resources on Racism, Equity, Higher Education and the Future here – AND- resources on Neoliberalism and the Knowledge Economies Paradigm here.) Occasionally – I’ll drop some here as well. Hope you find them as interesting as I do. I’ve spent much of my career inside and around the edges of higher education – and there has never been a time that things are changing as rapidly as they are right now. What kind of future will we create for our universities and colleges?

And a few interesting online tools of use to academics:

In 2019, the Institute for the Future engaged in a project specifically looking at the future of higher education as it might co-exist with blockchain technologies. This is a provocative short film to help viewers really think “out of the box.” The purpose of this piece is to imagine a world with this future. Learning is Earning.
