Letter defines real opportunities to improve quality of care for Black patients with serious illness through CMMI payment models.

The Center to Advance Palliative Care has submitted a letter to Elizabeth Fowler and team at the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI), which highlights how the quality of care for Black patients with serious illness can be improved under CMMI’s strategy refresh. CMMI’s new strategy adds a strong focus on health equity, along with provider accountability, affordability, and partnership. CAPC shared some of its key findings from an ongoing environmental scan and recommended, among other things, systematic and proactive identification of beneficiaries with likely palliative care needs and explicit inclusion of specialty palliative care services in all relevant models. CAPC recognizes that palliative care is needed for success under value, and particularly essential to ensure equitable patient and family care during serious illness.
