CAPC Responds to HELP Committee RFI on Workforce

On March 20, 2023, CAPC submitted comments in response to a request for information (RFI) from the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee on the root causes of the current health care workforce shortage and potential ways to address it. Building on the February 16 hearing in which Senator Tammy Baldwin highlighted how Palliative Care and Hospice Education and Training Act (PCHETA, S. 4260 in the 117th Congress) could address each aspect of the health care workforce pipeline, CAPC highlighted the benefits of palliative care training. Recommendations included exposing mid-career professionals to palliative care and/or other patient-centered specialties; attending to the holistic needs of the current health care workforce; and passing legislation to support the future workforce such as PCHETA, the Resident Physician Shortage Reduction Act of 2021 (H.R. 2256/S. 834, 117th Congress), and loan repayment vehicles such as the Provider Training in Palliative Care Act (S. 2890, 117th Congress) and S.705 (118th Congress).
