Caseload limits proposed to ease burnout and support effective social work

A report for social work leaders has proposed specific caseload limits for practitioners to help mitigate the mounting workload burdens many face. The Setting the Bar study , which surveyed more than 1,500 social workers in Scotland – about a quarter of the public-sector workforce – recommended ‘indicative’ limits of 15 cases for children’s social workers and 20 to 25 for peers carrying out adults’ and criminal justice work.

Every so often (maybe one or twice a week), I get a little restless. I feel like I have a lot of nervous energy, and I don’t know what to do with it all. In larger sense, I describe it as feeling “off.” Most of the time, I end up finding a clear reason about why that is – a big life event, a change in my schedule, even just missing a meal or a step in my routine can cause it.

Three-quarters of councils allow flexible working for all children’s social workers

More than three-quarters of children’s services in England (78%) allow all social workers to work flexibly, finds Community Care’s annual Total Reward survey on pay and benefits. Flexible hours were the most common form of flexible working, with 15 of the 36 children’s services respondents (42% of the total) saying over a quarter of staff worked in this way.

A council’s response to children at immediate risk of harm has “deteriorated” after senior leaders failed to speedily put in place extra funds to boost social work capacity, Ofsted has warned. A focused visit to Tameside in April, primarily looking at the council’s ‘front door’, found that additional investment promised after inspectors’ last trip to the Greater Manchester borough had not materialised quickly enough, fuelling widespread service delays.
