Counseling and Change

There’s the joke regarding a man praying every Sunday for God to make him a millionaire.

Each and every Sunday, the same prayer.

After years of such prayer, this one time, there is a bolt of lightning. He then hears the voice of God, “I would love to answer your prayer and make you a millionaire.”

God continues, “Meet me halfway. Buy a ticket!”

So too do many counselors feel.

People come seeking change, but don’t necessarily do the work.

Regardless of the counselor and their approach, at the end of it all is the person who attends doing something different.

Doing something different.

That is the objective of all counseling whether it is how one thinks, feels or behaves.

We can provide insight to promote change and/or direct strategies to facilitate change.

In the end, it is always up to the person.

Meet me halfway. Buy a ticket.

I chatted recently with a social worker who felt guilty unable to help someone. The social worker felt responsible, yet the person took no responsibility for themself.

We can only help so far.

The rest is up to you.

With that the social worker better understood the limit of their responsibility and was able to accept, we don’t help everyone.

Buy a ticket. Do something different.

Therein comes change.
