Screening tool helps to identify SICU patients for palliative care consults, reducing burden on families and medical staff.

As announced by the American College of Surgeons, a research team at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-Chapel Hill) has developed a palliative care screening tool for patients in the surgical intensive care unit (SICU). With the goal of helping with decision-making and increasing awareness around palliative care, the team successfully developed a tool, which within 30 seconds (via three key questions), identifies which patients may benefit from a palliative care consultation.
