Congratulations to Shelter’s Clinical Director Gilbert Allen, who, with his brother Dr. Michael Allen, are among those who received Crain’s Chicago Business’ Notable Black Leaders and Executives Award of 2022. The prestigious award recognizes leaders who have contributed significantly to the Black community in various fields, from law and medicine to non-profits and academia.

Gilbert Allen has a master’s degree in social work and is working on a doctorate in counseling, community care, and trauma which contribute to his success as a youth mentor. However, his passion for mentoring began in childhood when he experienced the challenges of being a Black student dealing with poverty and racism. It was the mentorship of his older brother Michael that changed the direction of Gilbert’s life.

In his role at Shelter, Mr. Allen leads the clinical team providing free mental health care to youths who have experienced trauma and their families. He has enriched the program by incorporating his innovative strategies, with the goal, he says, of “helping youths grow and get better.”

In 2020, the Allen brothers published their first book, “Brotherly Love,” their true story of love and mentorship. Their second book is due out by the end of 2022. However, Mr. Allen uses many resources to inspire young people as a role model, especially for young people of color.

Mr. Allen acknowledges his appreciation of Shelter’s executive director Carina Santa Maria and associate director Gina Ciulla, for their continued support and opportunity to lead in an executive position. He is looking forward to continuing his contribution to the Black community and all youths in need.
