Monitoring your mood

Monitoring your mood

Often one of the first things psychologists will get their clients to do is to monitor their mood. Tracking your mood becomes an important resource in the therapy process as it provides information to be able to:

  • identify any patterns
  • recognise possible triggers or any environmental stressors
  • understand varying levels if intensity

Being aware of patterns, triggers/stressors, and levels of intensity can give you the opportunity to be able to:

  • manage triggers
  • make informed choices about your daily life
  • prevent and/or manage intense emotions
  • work towards a better quality of life

Becoming more aware and connected to your mood and feelings during the day, will allow you to identify what supports to engage in or changes to make based on your personal needs and to intentionally respond to how you are feeling rather than reacting automatically and potentially in unhelpful ways that maintain your low/anxious/stressed mood state.

Methods of tracking/monitoring your mood are:

  • Worksheet (pen and paper) For and example see here.

  • notes app on your phone

  • mobile apps

While mood monitoring is a common technique used in therapy, it can be useful for anyone to track their mood. If your moods are making it hard for you to function day to day, feeling stuck, or struggling to manage your emotions please contact us at Prosper Health Collective to get some support with helping to shift and/or improve your overall mood.
